    The MSR Environmental Impact

    Since The Montessori School launched its Environmental Impact Campaign in 2020, we have been dedicated to integrating "Green Programs" into improving the local environment, learning how we can make "Green" changes in the school, at home, and in the community to reduce the overall impact we have on the environment.

    Evergreen School

    The Montessori School has been a Certified Michigan Green School since 2022. Both the Rochester Hills and Crystal Lake campuses have held the Evergreen status since 2023. To learn more about Green Schools and required projects, please visit https://greenschools-michigan.hub.arcgis.com/

    Recycling Program Expansion

    Currently MSR recycles paper and cardboard through GFL, though the Green Impact Team is looking into mixed media recycling options not currently offered through GFL. MSR participates in the Paper Retriever Program through GFL, a program that donates funds to organizations based on the weight of paper collected.

    Is it hard to compost? Does it smell? The answer to both is NO! We can reduce the amount of food waste MSR produces daily by switching from throwing leftover food away to composting. Students will scrape their plates off after snack and lunch into a countertop compost bin instead of the trash. After lunch, or afternoon snack, students can

Students will scrape their plates off after snack and lunch into a countertop compost bin instead of the trash. After lunch, or afternoon snack, students can take the class compost collection bin to the designated composting area on campus.

    Garden Revitalization

    There are so many gardens on campus and they all need some love. The Garden Revitalization Program will refurbish our gardens throughout the campus, bring in native plants, create a certified Monarch Waystation on campus, and reduce the overall maintenance of the gardens by planting companion species.
